Harper Lee's world famous To Kill a Mockingbird explores the prejudice throughout the 1930's and how little African-American's were treated with justice itself. Tom Robinson is a black man living in a white mans society, when he's brought to court for the alleged rape of a young white girl, he doesn't stand a chance. It seemed to be deemed fair that Tom got imprisoned for something he didn't do, because the white people claimed he was guilty. No one gave Tom Robinson a chance when he deserved it. Tom was an innocent man with no moral justice given to him.
Prejudice and BigotryWhen it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s the white man always wins.’
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” Scout and Jem- prejudice is expressed through these characters as they learn how wrong it all is. Tom Robinson- He’s a black man in court going against a white man, he doesn’t have a chance. Atticus- he expresses prejudice by teaching his kids not to judge people by the colour of their skin or how much money they have. He’s a moral man. Boo Radley- everyone thinks hes a monster because he doesn’t come out of the house, however he’s a really caring man. The concern is racism in particular. How much black people were actually discriminated upon. They have no say in society, and there’s no chance for them. They live in a split society. She’s trying to raise the concern for it to the readers so they can fix the problem. From Tom Robinson being charged with rape on the young white woman Mayella Ewell, when tom never did anything. Yes prejudice is a concern of the context Justice because is pretty much the opposite of fair as people aren’t treated with human rights, rather how people see them in the society they live in. |
Harper LeeHarper Lee is widely known around the world for her 1960 Pulitzer Prize winning To Kill a Mockingbird. The novel explores the racism and injustice she observed as a child, in her hometown. In February 2015, nearly blind and deaf after a stroke, and after a lifetime of upholding that she would never publish novel, Lee released a statement through her attorney, that she is publishing a second novel, to be published in July 2015, that was written before To Kill a Mockingbird. When Lee was just 6 years old, there was a highly publicised court case, the Scottsboro trials, involving several young African-American men. There are many similarities between this case and the trial of Tom Robinson, in To Kill a Mockingbird. in 1931, a freight train was stopped in Northern Alabama and nine young African-American men who were riding the rails were arrested. Two women, one who was underage descended the freight cars, they accused the men of raping them. Although none of the accused were executed, they remained on death row for many years, the case not settled until 1976, with the pardon of the defendants. The similarities between the novel and Scottsboro trials include the word of a poor white woman, against the word of an African-American man and the fact that there was no real evidence.
